Panera Bread Upgrades Customer Rewards Program

Panera Bread is launching a revamped loyalty program called MyPanera on Wednesday, shifting away from its previous model to a clearer, points-based system that rewards customers for every dollar spent.

A Shift From Surprise to Structure

The chain’s chief digital officer, Joshua Fine, said the new approach addresses past confusion. The old program relied on rewards that were difficult for guests to understand. Fine explained that customers often felt unsure about what they would receive and when. The new structure offers transparency, allowing diners to see exactly how their spending translates into discounts.

Under the new plan, guests earn 10 points for every $1 spent. The rewards are more straightforward, allowing for greater flexibility in how they are redeemed. Fine noted that the changes have already resonated with users, bringing in new and returning customers to the program, which boasts roughly 70 million members.

The system features three distinct tiers. The base MyPanera tier is free. For example, 250 points can be used for a free bagel, while 2,000 points earn an entrée or whole sandwich. The second tier, MyPanera+, requires spending more than $300 in a calendar year. This level includes a free birthday “You Pick Two” and bonus points on delivery orders. The top tier, MyPanera+Sip Club, bundles a subscription service that allows members to get up to 30 self-service drinks monthly for $14.99.

Testing the Waters

After testing the changes earlier this year, the chain saw strong results. Fine stated that new members joined and began transacting at a high rate. He believes this formula will guide the company moving forward.

The rollout includes a promotional period from August 19 through September 1. New members receive a 500-point bonus on their first transaction, which is worth a free drink. Members also get exclusive access to a new Tropical Mango Pineapple Refresher available only through the app. Existing members are automatically enrolled, though they must enter their phone number or ID at the register to ensure they earn their points.

Unlike the previous subscription model, which offered unlimited drinks, the Sip Club is now capped at 30 drinks per month. For a limited time, the service is available for $5 for three months. The chain has also enlisted actress and singer Keke Palmer to promote the “Refreshingly Loyal” campaign through social media, highlighting the value of the new rewards system, which focuses on supply chain risks in terms of customer loyalty.
