Starbucks Sells Record Number of Unicorn Drinks

Starbucks broke sales records last weekend, thanks to the reintroduction of the Unicorn Frappuccino, with 2 million drinks sold. The coffee shop giant’s North American, company-operated stores generated more sales than they ever have before on the weekend of Aug. 15-16.

The Seattle-based company’s CEO, Brian Niccol, called the reintroduction “one for the record books” in a message this week. “It was a terrific cultural moment for Starbucks that every partner helped bring to life,” he said.

Data backs up the claim, with foot traffic to Starbucks locations on Saturday, Aug. 15, 44.3% higher than the daily average for 2026, according to the traffic tracking firm Placer.ai. Traffic that day was 28.5% higher than the average Saturday.

Niccol said that Saturday was the biggest Saturday sales day in the company’s history. Sunday traffic wasn’t much lower, at 22.2% higher than the average Sunday in 2026, according to Placer.ai.

The Unicorn Frappuccino was originally introduced in 2017 as a limited-time offer designed for the social media generation. The drink is bright enough to practically glow in the dark, with a mango-flavored pink base and a sour blue drizzle, whipped cream and pink-and-blue topping.

Niccol’s post featured workers wearing unicorn hats and dressed as unicorns. He credited baristas for showing up “with energy, creativity and care” and for their execution and lauded support employees for ensuring there was plenty of inventory and for creating the buzz that led to such a strong sales day.

Starbucks has generated stronger sales of late, including 7.9% same-store sales growth in the U.S. last quarter. They have focused on in-store operations, remodeling stores, adding workers, and upgrading the mobile app to reduce backups during peak periods.

In similar situations, companies have seen significant boosts in sales from limited-time offers, often due to the social media buzz generated by unique products. This phenomenon is not unique to Starbucks, as other companies have also seen success with similar promotions.

The success of the Unicorn Frappuccino can be attributed to its unique flavor and appearance, as well as the company’s effective marketing strategy. By leveraging social media and creating a fun, playful atmosphere in their stores, Starbucks was able to generate significant buzz around the product and drive sales.

It will be important for Starbucks to continue innovating and finding new ways to engage with customers. With the rise of social media, companies are under increasing pressure to create unique and shareable experiences, and Starbucks has clearly risen to this challenge with the Unicorn Frappuccino.

As they look to the future, they must find new ways to innovate and stay ahead of the competition. The company’s ability to create buzz around new products will be key to their continued success.
