Amalgamated Brands Limited has launched a $20 million initial public offering (IPO) on the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX), marking the second traditional IPO in Zimbabwe since 2008. The move follows West Properties Holdings, which listed in 2023, as the other privately held company to complete an IPO during this period.
The company operates through three subsidiaries: Cailo Foods, which handles manufacturing; Cailologistics, responsible for distribution; and Cailo Marketing Services, managing sales and merchandising. Its product portfolio includes well-known brands like Spuds, Willards, and Sun Jam, with over 95% of revenue generated in US dollars.
The IPO consists of $5 million in new shares and $15 million in existing shares, priced at $0.35 per share. Funds from the primary offering will first support capacity expansion, including a new biscuit production line in Harare, a Tetra Pak plant for baked beans, a soft-snacks line, and additional solar power capacity targeting 22% of the group’s energy needs. These upgrades aim to double existing production capacity and improve energy resilience.
Existing shareholder Takura Capital will receive the $15 million from the secondary sale, reducing its stake from 98% to 69%. New minority investors will hold 29% of shares, while employees will own about 1.6%. Group CEO Anele Zunga stated that proceeds will finance expansion across key product lines, while chairman Washington Matsaira emphasized the company’s integrated model as a competitive advantage.
“In a market like ours, availability is not a given; it is earned,” Matsaira said, noting the importance of controlling production quality, costs, and retail availability. The listing aligns with broader trends across African markets, where manufacturers seek capital to boost local production and reduce supply-chain risks.
Amalgamated Brands’ investments reflect how capital markets can fund production upgrades in Zimbabwe’s food industry. By combining established brands with expanded manufacturing capacity, the company aims to strengthen its position while offering investors exposure to a business with most revenue in US dollars.
